DEPRESSION & CBT

Today got an email from my cousin... who has depression...
since I learned about it and its treatment at UCLA... so I might as well collect my thoughts and help her... and it might also benefit others who need help!

While I was in college, my school was emphasizing on CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy). And I did some research on that.. It might take time, but the good thing is you dont have to RELY on medicine!!

CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion), and how we act (behavior) all interact together. Specifically, our thoughts influence our feelings and our behavior. Therefore, negative and unrealistic thoughts can cause us distress and result in problems.

I think what you can do are..........

1. Think about your what REAL problems are, what really confuses and upsets you, just anything that brings you down.

2. WRITE them down... in a journal... Make a list of your problems...
Write down your THOUGHTS and FEELINGS!!

3. THINK POSITIVELY!! THINKING is the Cognitive part...
It's very important to think postivively... even though it's easy to think negatively, but whenever there are negative or depressing thoughts that come aross your mind, just do anything you can do get rid of that BAD thoughts!! Yes Negative is BAD!! Think about something that makes you HAPPY & SMILE & LAUGH!! It's very very important !!

Distract yourself from THINKING NEGATIVELY!! But DO NOT avoid the problems!! Just Avoid the negative thoughts!!

4. After you are done with the Postive thinking, you DO IT!! "DO" is part of Behavior... DO things that are POSITIVE or GOOD!!
You do something that make you HAPPY. What are your interests? What are your hobbies?
If you like indoors (like seeing movies, cooking, ...), or outdoors (hanging out with your friends, exercise...). You should know what your insterests are ...

5. It's important to do it Gradually... meaning Do NOT rush it... just start from begining and do it SLOWLY... you cant expect it to work in 1 day!

6. My suggestion is, do not hang out with NEGATIVE people, people that think negatively or is depressed... they tend to think things would go bad, and worry Excessively... They even try to influence others with their bad mood and thoughts!! Like my Mom... she's quite typical! I always told her that she thought tooo negative, she worries about this and that... yeh you might say well moms are always like that... BUT Not everyone!! And everytime she does this to me, I'd get upset and depressed!! I dont like that kind of feeling...

7. Also, Exercise can do some miracle too... dont stay at home, online all day... just do some walking and jogging, ask your mom or brother to walk or run with you... during late afternoon when it's not too hot...

8. Remember the list of your problems and thoughts?
FACE THEM!! Yes, Face each and every of them BRAVELY!!

Challenge your negative thoughts!! To re-interpret it in a more realistic way .This helps you to develop more RAITONAL beliefs and healthy coping strategies.
(e.g. a person got fired, and he doesnt have any money, he feels that he must have a good career and make lots of money, or else he'd feel worthless,
and now he feels depressed because he lost his job and has no money!!

(1) What Activated or triggered his depression? He lost his job and has no money.

(2) What are the negative thoughts and Belief? He feels worthless cuz he has no jobs and money, and he sees other people has good jobs and lots of money!

(3) What are the Consequences? He's depressed!!

How do we help this person? First like I just did, we Identify the problems. We Face the problems. Ask himself, does losing a job making him the most worthless person in the world? Yeh having a good job is good, losing a job is not that bad! He can pick himself up and find a job again! Ask himself, what can be done to find a better job? Maybe more school? more degree? Know what he really is interested in... Not what other people are expecting him to be!

***Do not try to compare yourself with others!! It's very important! cuz comparing and competing only make you feel anxious and leads to depression if you THINK that you are no better than other people!!

Do not try to avoid them!! Next to each of your problems, you think of what can be done to Solve this perticular problem.

I think ONLY YOU know what your real problems are, and probably Only you know what the solutions are... If you cant think of a solution, you can ask for help from your friends, family, or even doctors!!

9. RELAX... Maybe get a Massage? A total body massage can make you feel relax... and after the massage, get a bath... just listen to some light music or songs, just do not think of anything else, just relax in the bathtub... and drink water...

Or you can eat... just not too much, eat healthy... do not eat bad foods..

10. I support CBT combined with Anti-depressant drugs. When I was in college, I wrote a BIG paper about this topic... because it's so far the MOST effective way of treating depression!
Also has the lowest Replaspe rate!!

11. So do NOT discontinue the medication that you are taking, take them everyday, and do what I just told you everyday... write down the date that you start doing them, and then see how long it will take you to WALK OUT of your depression!!

Tom Yum Kung (THAI HOT SOUP)

1. Lemon grass
2. Ginger
3. Lime juice
4. Lime skin
5. Lime leaves
6. Thai chili pepper
7. Cilantro
8. Thai basil
9. Oranic chicken stock
10. Shrimp
11. Fish sauce
12. Mirin
13. Brown sugar

*Add Lemon grass, lime skin, ginger, lime leaves, chili peper, fish sauce, mirin, brown sugar, into the stock, broil...

*Add shrimp or tofu or chicken into the stock...
(I cant eat mushroom, allergic to that!! so you can add mushroom if you want!)

*The min before you turn off the fire, add cilantro, Thai basil, and then lime juice

*If want the other creamy kind of soup base, just add coconut milk at the end...

** This is a MUST Eat Thai soup!!

**Again, this soup has the 4 flavors of Thai food: Spicy, Sweet, Sour, and Aroma.
You might wonder, why eat all these hot dishes during summer? It's already HOT enough outside!!

**Yes, during summer our appetite is low, so the sourness, spicyness, and the aroma can stimulate our appetite. Also, the spicyness can stimulate the blood vessel--->Vasodilate... so when the vessels are dilated, the cirulation is better, blood flows back to heart, and supply enough O2 to our Important Brain!! So we wouldnt feel too tired and fatigue...

**Also it's very important to SWEAT!! The spicyness definitely can help us SWEAT a lot!
When we sweat, the heavy metal and other bad stuff are out of our system... and in a way, cleans our body!

**Think about it this way, Thailand, Vietnam, India, and all the Southeastern countries are SUMMER All year round!! But, they have all these Spicy/Sour dishes. And those countries are famous for their veggie and spices, if these ingreidents are bad for people, why would they use those ingredients and create all different kinds of dishes? And totally blend them all into their lives!!

**BUT, remember DO NOT drink COLD water or drinks after eating hot foods, cuz it's just adding extra burden to our stomach (GI system)... Even though it feels good when we eat something cold during summer, but it's only for the Temporay pleasure, it's Not good for our body! If eating cold with hot stuff, some can get diarrhea and upset stomach!

** The best way to cool us down is to drink normal temp. water... just plenty of water... to make up the Sweat that lost!!

THAI CURRY LAMB

1. Lemongrass
2. Thai Bail
3. Purple Onion
4. Garlic
5. Ginger
6. Cilantro
7. Red/Green chili pepper
8. Lime
9. Lime skin
10. Lime leaves

11. Brown sugar
12. Mirin
13. white pepper
14. Sea salt
15. Coconut milk
16. Curry powder
17. Fish sauce

18. Leg of Lamb (3lbs)

*I love Thai curry, the majority of the ingridents are veggi.... but I dont like japanese and indian.. too much spices!

*Oilve oil, high heat, seal lamb (chop into chunks), season the lamb with sea salt and pepper.
Brown all sides, set it aside (on a plate)

*Blend up 1-12, put it into pan, fry it with the oilve oil and lamb juice!!
add brown sugar, fish sauce, white pepper, sea salt , mix well till the aroma is out!

*Add curry powder, mix well

*Put the lamb back to the pan, mix well, cover it up, low heat, add Coconut milk, cook till the meat is NICE & TENDER!!

*Get a bowl of Thai Jasmine rice, and...................... Drumrolls................ ENJOY!!!

** Can substitue lamb with beef, Duck, or chicken... just use the kind of meat that has stronger and meaty flavor!

**Thai curry is not only very aromatic (the aroma from all the veggi and spices), but also has this sweetness from brown sugar and purple onion, a bit sourness from lime, the Spicyness from Red/Green chili pepper, and then finally ROUND it all UP with the creaminess of Coconut milk!!

**ALL the flavors balance each other out, no one overpowers the other, yet you can taste each and every Unique flavor!!!

**I heard that Lamb is acutally very good and can boost up our energy, esp. during this HOT summer! I think this dish can be eaten all year around... cuz during COLD winter, lamb can warm you up!

TWO LESS LONELY PEOPLE IN THE WORLD--- I MISS MY GRANDPA!!

December 8, 2005 the day my DEAREST Grandfather passed away... :...(

That Monday and Tuesday were my final exams, I had to take 4 exams and quickly packed and rushed back home...

My flight to Taiwan was Wed. afternoon, he passed away before 2am on wed. night (Taiwan's time), so it's before 10am on wed. cali time. but I didnt know that he had left!!

On the plane, I listened to this song by air supply, a very old song, for some reason I repeatly listened to it and couldnt stop thinking about my Grandpa and couldnt stop my tears...

Maybe cuz the sad tone of this song... I remember it was a very stressful time, for weeks I hadnt been sleeping, studying hard for exams and lots of thing to do... on top of that, the week before final exam, my grandpa was sent into hospital...

Right at that moment I heard about that, I knew it's not looking good... he had Gastric adenocarcinoma... and later on, they dx that it's already the last stage... it already metastasized to liver...

I was sooo envy that my brother was able to be there and checked on him, once in the life time most precious lesson!! I wished wished that I was there too...

A few days before my grandpa passed away, I told my Dad that I wanted to see my grandpa ONE LAST TIME!! My Dad wanted me not to worry too much, and he even tried to lie to me!
On the day I was about to leave for airport, my Dad told me oh Grandpa was fine, and he promised that he'd take me to visit him as soon as I got off the plane! Ok I did believe my Dad...

Around 12 Thursday night, I finally arrived, and my Dad and brother went to pick me up... in the cab, no one was talking, and I was thinking, hmmm is Dad gonna take me to hospital now? how come he didnt say anything? And shit everyone was sooo quiet, so I didnt ask... I was thinking maybe tomorrow morning....

When I got home, saw my Mom, the first thing she told me was, "Grandpa already passed away!!" HOLY SHIT!!! Yeh exactly, I was cursing!! well not directly toward my mom, but just just didnt know how to react... just that everyone was so damn normal, no one was crying!! My brother said , "well, Dad told him not to say anything!" Ha, Dad knew how upset I'd get if I found out.... Everyone was really good at ACTING!! Damn!

I was like shit I had to go see him... they were like where do you think you are going?! he's not at hospital ! His body was sent to somewhere else! so we talked till very late that night... and I woke up real early, cuz I had to go see him!!

He was lying in his coffin, but I could not see him. So I didnt get to see him AGAIN! Damn it!

I bet he was very lonely when he passed away in the hospital... no one was by his side...
I wished wished that my plane would fly faster, so I could be there... holidng his hands.... touching his face... ONE LAST TIME....

On Dec. 18, it's his final day on earth... Everyone was there to send him... he was the GREATEST MAN I know, and HE is MY ONLY GRANDPA!!!

I LOVE YOU GRANDPA!!!
You are the first person in my life gave me the GREATEST COMPLIMENTS and PRAISES!! Without you, I wouldnt have the CONFIDENCE that I have!!

You were there, holding me up, and putting me on your shoulder when I was just a little kid crying, lying on the floor, hiding under table, missing my mom, and was teased by that stupid uncle!

You were there, you knew that my heart was hurt when that stupid uncle made stupid comments (cuz my mom took my elder brother to travel and left me in my greatgrand parents' house, and that ass uncle said things like ha ha ha your mom didnt want you, you had no mom, ha ha ha!!).

You said nothing, you just picked me up, walked out of the house, and left my other cousins and that uncle so damn jealous!! LOL

I was the only grandkid that you put on top of your shoulder, and you took me to a nightmarket, bought me candy, still remember it's the sweet and sour kind of fruit that's coated with a layer of candy. We also stood there and watched a show!!
I remember there were lots of people that worked for you followed US quietly!!

I was licking the candy with a big smile on my tearful face... even though it's many many years ago, but I still remember ... maybe you've forgot about it, but in my little mind, you were a Giant, that raised me up... you knew what to do to comfort a little kid... a President of a big company would do that?! That I never dreamed of... but it's True!

You always praised me in front of everyone when I was just a little kid, and yes I was always the ONLY one that you praised about! I was stunned everytime you gave me compliments... cuz you were my idol!! And that did MEAN A LOT to me!!

Everytime I went back to Taiwan and visited you, even though you were getting old and not having great memory, and you were very quiet, didnt talk much while everyone was chatting out loud!! But for sure, you were Listening! Cuz whenever my Mom, grandma, and aunt were talking about my performance, you'd look at me and gave me a THUMBS UP sign, a HUGE SMILE, a few Nods, and said "VERY VERY GOOD!!"

Yes, you didnt need to say tons of words to express yourself, but just a thumbs up, a huge smile, and a few nods BEAT thousands of words!! And that, for sure I'll remember FOREVER!!

THANK YOU GRANDPA!! YOU ARE ALWAYS IN MY HEART!!

I was down my dreams were wearing thin
When you're lost where do you begin
My heart always seemed to drift from day to day
Looking for the love that never came my way

Then you smiled and I reached out to you
I could tell you were lonely too
One look and then it all began for you and me
The moment that we touched I knew that there would be

Two less lonely people in the world
And it's gonna be fine
Out of all the people in the world
I just can't believe you're mine
In my life where everything was wrong
Something finally went right
Now there's two less lonely people In the world tonight

Just to think what I might have missed
Looking back how did I existI dreamed,
still I never thought I'd come this far
But miracles come true, I know 'cause here we are

Tonight I fell in love with you
And all the things I never knew
Seemed to come to me somehowBaby,
love is here and now there's

If Ever You're In My Arms Again

IF EVER YOU'RE IN MY ARMS AGAIN (Peabo Bryson)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1h4ridjFGSc

It all came so easy, all the loving you gave me The feelings we shared, and I still can remember How your touch was so tender, it told me you cared We had a once in a lifetime But I just couldn't see, until it was gone A second once in a lifetime, may be too much to ask But I swear from now on

If ever you're in my arms again This time I'll love you much better If ever you're in my arms again This time I'll hold you forever This time will never end

Now I'm seeing clearly How I still need you near me I still love you so There's something between us That won't ever leave us There's no letting go We had a once in a lifetime But I just didn't know it Till my life fell apart A second once in a lifetime Isn't too much to ask 'Cause I swear from the heart

Now I'm seeing clearly How I still need you near me I still love you so There's something between us That won't ever leave us There's no letting go We had a once in a lifetime But I just didn't know it Till my life fell apart A second once in a lifetime Isn't too much to ask 'Cause I swear from the heart

Chorus
The best of romances, deserve second chances I'll get to you somehow 'Cause I promise now

The youngest of Al Gore's three daughters, Sarah Gore, 28, married businessman Bill Lee in Beverly Hills on Saturday, family spokesperson Kalee Kreider confirms to PEOPLE. The bride, who is taking her husband's last name, wore a gown by Monique Lhuillier at the wedding, which took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Willie Nelson performed at the reception, according to a family friend who was there and described it as "a great party." Sarah Lee, as she is now named, is a medical student at the University of California San Francisco. She met her husband at a function for her father's Oscar-winning environmental documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. The movie was executive produced by Jeff Skoll, who served as the best man at the wedding. "As one person joked during the wedding toasts, global warming helped bring Sarah and Bill together," the family friend tells PEOPLE.

The Gore family hosted a rehearsal dinner for 75 family and friends the previous evening at Beverly Hills' Crustacean restaurant, a longtime favorite of the Gores. Crustacean's executive chef, Helene An, created for the wedding-eve party a six-course tasting menu that included Chilean sea bass and roasted crab. (To allay any conservationist concerns, the restaurant later specified that the sea bass served were not endangered or illegally caught.) Then there was the dancing. "Al was the life of the party," says a source. "He and Tipper rocked on the dance floor." Love reading about weddings? Check out our new Real Life Weddings blog.

Sarah Gore, youngest daughter of Al and Tipper Gore, to California businessman Bill Lee. Gore, a 28-year-old med student at the University of California at San Francisco, met Lee, 36, in Los Angeles. This is the first marriage for both; a July wedding is planned.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRYQtQZRquw

I wanna call the star down from the sky
I wanna live the day that never dies
I wanna change the world, only for you
All the impossible that I wanna do

I wanna hold you close... under the rain
I wanna kiss your smile ...and feel the pain
I know what's beautiful... looking at you
In the world of lies...you are the truth

and baby...everytime you touch me
I become a hero
I'll make you safe no matter where you are
and bring you ...everything you ask for
nothing is above me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
when you tell me that you love me

I wanna make you see just what I was
show you the loneliness and what it does
you walk into my life, to stop my tears,
everything is easy now... I have you here

and baby... everytime you touch me
I become a hero
I'll make you safe no matter where you are
and bring you... everything you ask for
nothing is above me
I'm shining like a candle in the dark
when you tell me that you love me.

ooooooo in the world without you,
I will always hunger
all I need is your love
to make me stronger

everytime you touch me
I become a hero
I'll make you safe
no matter where you are
and bring you
everything you ask for
nothing is above me

when you tell me that you love me

** I havent done this dish for years!! Lots of prep work, but it's very easy to do this dish!
can substitue and/or add ingredients, but these are the basic igridients!

**This is a very traditional Taiwanese dish. The green skin pumpkin has sweet and soft taste when it's cooked, so it goes very well with rice noodle!

** with the amount I used, probably can feed 12-15 people!

**sometimes people like to add fresh seafoods like oyster, shrimp, clams, scallop, squid, etc.
If they are fresh, the whole dish would taste really good. But here in the US, not easy to get FRESH & LIVED seafoods, a lot of frozen ones, and NO sweet and fresh taste!! Even if they are lived and fresh, they are super expensive!

**For vegitarians, can add tofu and other veggie, or just dont add meat!

T7 is VERY IMPORTANT!!

Ok today I learned something that's very important and can possibly save anyone's life!

At T7 or the lower boarder of scapular (draw a horizontal line between the scapulars, just at the middle of the line), use middle knuckle pressed HARD into that spot, press and massage for a while. To increase the effect, can also pound on it with your fist!

What can this do?

When a pt has Angina or MI, ask the pt to sit, you do the pressing job on his/her back.
Miracle can happen! This probably has the effect of Nitroglycerin!

But of course, gotta call 911 first, and while waiting for the paramedics, you can probably save a person's life!!

SICKO!!

Incendiary documentarian Michael Moore has a penchant for ticking people off. After all, he's the man responsible for chastising Americans for their obsession with violence in the 2002 Oscar-winning doc 'Bowling for Columbine.' And -- as if you'd forgotten -- he also famously ripped President Bush a new one in 2004's 'Fahrenheit 9/11,' which examined Bush's mishandling of Middle East policies and earned $119 million (by far a record for documentaries) in the process. But if you think you'll object to Moore's newest film 'Sicko,' about the dire need for U.S. health care reform (and, more specifically, universal health care), you may want to put down those "We Don't Want Moore" banners and get ready to do something you never thought possible: wholeheartedly agree with the man.In 'Sicko,' Moore travels to England, France, Canada and even Cuba to see how the health care programs in those countries stack up to our own (hint: they're better), and exposes how even those U.S. citizens with health insurance are victimized by the system. The result is a film that is simultaneously informative, jaw-droppingly scary and immensely entertaining. It is also Moore's least controversial, least partisan film to date. And, as the filmmaker himself told us in an exclusive interview, that could be a very dangerous thing. Why make a movie about the failings of the U.S. health care system now, at this specific moment in time?Well, it is the number one domestic issue in the country, according to every poll that's taken. It is something that affects everyone. Everyone gets sick. Everyone needs to see the doctor at some point. And it's the best example of how our system is set up to benefit the few at the expense of the many.A lot of critics are saying that this is your least controversial film to date. Why do you think they're saying that ... and do you agree with them?I think maybe a better way to put it is that it may end up being a more dangerous film because it's less controversial, because it does reach out and will appeal to all kinds of people and not just hard-core Democrats. And because of that, if it reaches more people it has a better chance of having some impact.

Do you think you have the chance to win over some more people, the kind of people who wouldn't have seen a Michael Moore film a few years back?Yeah, but I won them over not just by making this film but because they remember that crazy guy in the ball cap was one of the first to say that we're being led to war for fictitious reasons and that it wasn't going to work. Now, after all these years, people are seeing that's exactly what happened. So if I turned out to sort of have my finger on the pulse that time, maybe the next time it might be worth listening to what I'm saying. What do you hope to accomplish with 'Sicko'? Do you just want to bring the issue to the fore of U.S. consciousness and spark a discussion, or do you think the film could actually be a catalyst to reform? You know, it's hard to say. First and foremost, I make movies to entertain people and to give them a great two hours on a Friday night. So that's what I hope will happen.Do you think we'll ever have universal health care?Ha. Oh yeah. We're the last of the industrialized countries. The other 24 have it. We're the last one. So yeah, it'll definitely come to us.In your opinion, what are the steps to get there?People are going to have to demand it because the politicians will not do it on their own. They're taking way too much money from the insurance industry and the pharmaceutical companies. So only if people stand up and demand it, tell their members of Congress they want it, will it happen. So, on the most basic level, if someone sees your film and gets fired up about the issue, what can they do to actually make a difference? There's a bill in Congress H.R. 676, sponsored by Representative John Conyers. Tell your representatives to sponsor that bill.

What was your reaction when you first learned that 'Sicko' had been leaked on the Web and was available to stream on YouTube? Obviously, the studio didn't want it out there, but were you happy in a way because it meant that people who probably would not have watched the film otherwise were now exposed to it?That's exactly how I feel. I don't like our copyright laws and I believe that it's OK to share information and ideas and art. It's not OK to steal it and sell it, but if you're sharing it for free with your friends, that should be perfectly OK.You projected the 'Sicko' trailer on buildings in Times Square, Sunset Blvd. and other heavily trafficked public areas. Have you seen any feedback from this?I think a lot of people were talking about it. I think the best sites were where we projected on the headquarters of some HMOs and pharmaceutical companies. I think that people really enjoyed that.In the film, you mention anonymously helping the man who runs the biggest anti-Michael Moore Web site to pay some medical bills. Now that your assistance is no longer anonymous, have you had any further contact with him?Yes, I called him before the first time we screened it at the film festival in Cannes and told him it was me. I didn't want him to be surprised by it.And what did he say?He was very grateful and thanked me and wished the film well. And then said, "I'm still going to talk smack about you on my Web site tomorrow"?Ha. Well, he might. That's my point. His freedom of speech shouldn't be taken away just because he can't afford health insurance. No, definitely not. Now, the most controversial part of this film for most viewers will likely be the finale, in which you travel to Cuba with a group of Americans to see if they can get the health care there that they've been denied here. The Cuban people and medical community seemed to embrace you with open arms. Were they aware in advance that you were coming to Cuba? They were, but I told them we wanted the same exact care that the Cuban people get. I didn't want any special treatment. In fact, we went around and visited other clinics and hospitals to see how Cubans were treated to make sure we would get that kind of treatment.

What kind of criticisms or attacks do you foresee coming from Michael Moore naysayers after this film?None. I think this is one thing Americans can agree on.Who's your health care provider?I belong to the Director's Guild, so I'm on of the nine percent of the American workforce that belongs to a union. In a recent rally in L.A., you wished George Bush well. Are there really no hard feelings between the two of you?Ha. You know, I've never uttered the words, "I hate George W. Bush," and I never would say that. He's a human being, he's a fellow American. We have a disagreement, but I'm sure he thinks what he's doing is best. And, you know, I think what he's doing is taking us down the wrong path and has made our country less safe. And we've lost a lot of time here, so we'll have to get it back.Would you ever consider running for office, try to make a change that way?I was actually the first 18-year-old in Michigan to be elected to public office, back when 18-year-olds were given the right to vote back in the '70s. I was on the Board of Education. So I did that for four years. And I got to be the boss of the principal [laughs].And would you ever do that again? No [laughs]. I've served my time in public office. Now I do this. What topics out there are you just itching to tackle next?Oh, there are so many things and I'm so tired right now I can't even begin to think of them. And you're working on another film right now, correct?Yes, yes -- but I'm not talking about it.Have there been any films -- documentaries or otherwise -- that inspired you to do what you're doing now? There was an early film that inspired me. It was about the Vietnam War, called 'Hearts and Minds.' I encourage people to check it out.OK, one last question. Are there any movies -- other than your own -- that you're dying to see this summer?Oh yeah -- 'The Simpsons Movie' [laughs]. Are you kidding? We're all waiting for that.
